New tool lets you check if that iPhone or iPad is stolen

Wondering if that iPhone you're about to buy is stolen? Fear not: there's an Apple tool for that.

Apple's new iCloud tool lets a prospective buyer check the device's activation lock status by keying in the iPhone's serial number, tech site Engadget reported.

"(I)f you're the rightful owner, you'll get info on how to disable any activation locks before selling. Meanwhile, buyers will be shown how to remove the previous account (with the seller's permission)," it said.

For checking Activation Lock status, Apple will ask for the phone's IMEI to help make sure "the device is ready for you to use."

Engadget noted the tool can potentially counter "doulCi" devices, which supposedly bypass iCloud to enable activation but will not actually connect to a cell network.

"That'll prevent you from being fooled by a stolen or lost iPhone that appears to work, but is effectively... an iPod," it said. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
