Makati pupils to represent PHL in World Robot Olympiad in Russia
Three teams of students from Makati City's public schools will represent the Philippines in the World Robot Olympiad in Sochi, Russia on November 21 to 23.
In a statement, the Makati City government said the three robotics teams topped the 13th Philippine Robotics Olympiad in Quezon City.
Department of Education Makati Superintendent Dominico Idanan said the team from West Rembo Elementary School was the champion in the regular category, elementary level, while Pitogo High School team placed second in the regular category, secondary level.
Meanwhile, the team from Benigno Aquino High School won second place in the robot soccer category.
Idanan said the West Rembo champion team includes Grade 6 students Danielle Orsua and James Paul Legaspi, and Grade 5 student John Paul Hernandez , under Coach Richard Abines.
Pitogo's team includes sophomore Dave Emmanuel Nuada, and Joevy Bargo, Jr. and Daniel Figueroa, both fourth year high school students, under coaches Florante Ferrer and Roy Cabebe.
The robotics team from Benigno Aquino High School includes Francis Uriel Angat, Noah Christopher Tan and Mark Aljon Reales, all Grade 8 students, under Coach Edwin Haniel Engana.
WRO is a global robotics competition for the youth first held in Singapore in 2004. It has attracted teams from over 40 countries.
It has three categories: Regular, open and soccer.
In 2005, Makati Science High School bagged the Best Presentation in the science fiction category for its intergalactic “World of Imagine” entry. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
