All iOS apps to go 64-bit by early 2015

Starting February 2015, apps for iOS will have to be based on Apple's iOS 8 software development kit - and include 64-bit support, an enthusiast site reported.

Apple's developer news portal notified developers of the rules regarding App Store submission, 9to5mac.com reported.

"Currently, developers can choose whether to submit only 32-bit apps or universal binaries. This will no longer be an option from February," it said.

The site noted Apple had required similar adoption of the iOS 7 SDK last year.

Having apps support 64-bit should bring lead to major performance and memory gains for newer devices, including the A7 and A8 chips, it noted.

On the other hand, 9to5mac.com said Apple will not remove apps currently on the App Store. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
