Nokia back from the dead with N1 Android tablet

Just when you thought Nokia was no more after Microsoft bought up the once-powerful smartphone business, the Finnish company is back—with a new Android-powered tablet.

Nokia announced the new N1 tablet at the Slush 2014 conference in Finland on Tuesday, Boy Genius Reports said.

"Designed and built by the Nokia Technologies division of Nokia, the N1 tablet’s housing is one piece of machined, anodized aluminum. The device features a 7.9-inch display and an overall size that rivals Apple’s iPad mini lineup, but at 6.9mm, the N1 is even thinner than Apple’s iPad mini 3, which is 7.5mm thick," it said.

Also, the Nokia device runs Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google's latest mobile operating system - something BGR said may signal a move away from Windows Phone.

Powering the device is a 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor clocked at 2.4GHz.

But what could set the N1 apart is a universal insertion 2.0 USB C-type port.

Other features include:

  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB storage
  • an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera
  • a 5,300 mAh battery that can last up to nine hours on one charge

A separate report on TechPP.com said the tablet's display will have a 2048×1536 resolution, Gorilla glass 3 IPS panel with LED backlight.

"While Nokia’s deal with Microsoft prevents it from releasing any new smartphones for a period of time, tablets are apparently a different story entirely," BGR noted.

The Nokia N1 will launch February 2015 after the Chinese New Year, and it will be available initially only in China.

TechPP said the N1 is priced at $249, "an extremely competitive pricing from Nokia considering the specs alone." — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
