These unlucky 13 characters could crash a Chrome tab on Mac
A string of 13 characters could prove unlucky for users of Google Chrome browsers running on Apple's OS X, as it causes Chrome tabs to crash – and developers are concerned.
Developers at the Chromium Project's post cited potential spam attacks using the string of characters to force Chrome on Macs to crash.
"This is pretty serious. You could imagine someone spamming this message in hangouts/Gmail and just straight-up force crashing all Mac Chrome browsers. Someone could post this on Facebook, and force-crash all Mac Chrome browers that saw it," one said. .
Chromium Project said any page with the string can crash the Chrome tab on a Mac.
A separate report on VentureBeat said the problem does not seem to occur on Chrome for Windows, or even Safari on Mac.
But it also said its basic testing showed "the crash doesn’t always occur," though in some select cases, Mac users see 13 blank rectangles "though they never see the proper characters." — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
