Google simplifies search on smartphones
Good news for users of smartphones and mobile devices with relatively small screens: Google has made it easier to understand its search results.
Software engineer Bartlomiej Niechwiej and product manager Rob Ennals said a tweaked algorithm makes a better presentation of URLs in search results.
"(T)oday we’re updating the algorithms that display URLs in the search results to better reflect the names of websites, using the real-world name of the site instead of the domain name, and the URL structure of the sites in a breadcrumbs-like format," they said.
According to them, this also helps users understand a website better "when we show it in the mobile search results."
Google will also now support schema.org structured data for websites to signal to Google algorithms:
- the website name to be used instead of the domain name
- the URL structure of the URL as breadcrumbs
Niechwiej and Ennals said the changes will affect only mobile results.
"The site name change is US-only for now and breadcrumbs are rolling out worldwide," they added. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
