Facebook shutting down friends data API
Facebook is shutting down its API that allows users to give their friends' data to apps, tech sites reported this week.
This comes with the forced migration to Graph API v2.0 effective April 30, TechCrunch reported.
"(I)f people don’t feel comfortable using Facebook and specifically logging in Facebook and using Facebook in apps, we don’t have a platform, we don’t have developers," it quoted Facebook’s Simon Cross, who narrated how Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said one of Facebook’s new slogans is "People First."
"Some users will see it as a positive move that returns control of personal data to its rightful owners. Just because you’re friends with someone, doesn’t mean you necessarily trust their judgment about what developers are safe to deal with. Now, each user will control their own data destiny," TechCrunch added.
However, TechCrunch also noted apps do not have to delete data they already pulled.
"If someone gave your data to an app, it could go on using it. However, if you request that a developer delete your data, it has to. However, how you submit those requests could be through a form, via email, or in other ways that vary app to app. You can also always go to your App Privacy Settings and remove permissions for an app to pull more data about you in the future," it said.
Facebook has so far reviewed 5,000 top apps and advised them how their apps will perform after the change, the report said.
It also said the change may cause some apps to shut down, such as Job Fusion - which can pull data on where a user’s friends work to show job openings.
Facebook is also requiring all apps to use its new login system, which allows users more granular control over what data they can give developers.
The social networking giant has also instituted Login Review, that allows a team of Facebook employees to audit any app that requires more than users' basic data. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
