OnePlus touts first USB-C smartphone

A Chinese phone maker is laying claim to becoming the first to make a smartphone using the emerging USB-C technology.

OnePlus said its upcoming flagship OnePlus 2 will be the first to use the technology, which allows power and data transfer with a reversible plug.

"Type C USB is the way of the future. The varying port sizes taking up space on your devices will gradually change to the new Type C open standard for more efficiency. With all the benefits this brings, there’s no doubt we’ll be seeing it everywhere very soon. OnePlus 2 users will be future proof when this happens," it said.

It also said it will provide an adapter that will make the USB-C port backwards-compatible, so current owners of its product need not worry.

But OnePlus also said it is enhancing its USB-C port for features that "will be exclusive to OnePlus."

"Instead of merely being on par with the flagships of 2015, we want to show our industry buddies the way forward. We want to provide an amazing user experience that our competition won’t merely try and catch up to later this fall, but also throughout 2016 and beyond. The USB Type C port on the OnePlus 2 is just one of these details," it said.

USB-C made headlines earlier this year via Apple, which included it in its latest MacBook laptop.

Google has also embraced the new technology, including it in its latest Chromebook Pixel - and promised to support it in the next version of Android.

A separate report on T3.com said OnePlus' flagship phone could come out in the third quarter of 2015.
