Videogame streaming site Twitch starts dumping Flash for HTML5

Flash, the popular but attack-prone media-playing plugin, is about to be evicted from yet another major website.

The latest to start ditching Flash is popular game streaming service Twitch, which announced it is now moving toward HTML5.

"As you may have already heard, we’re beginning to roll out a redesign of our video player on web. Today’s redesign moves half of the video player – specifically the controls – from Flash to HTML5 and Javascript," it said in a July 22 blog post.

While Twitch videos are still in Flash format, Twitch said it is moving toward a full HTML5 player.

It added this is a gradual rollout, with the new media player expected on channel pages first.

A separate report on Engadget said Twitch is thus following in YouTube's footsteps with the switch.

Last January, it noted Google-owned video sharing site YouTube made HTML5 the default player for its videos instead of Flash.

Meanwhile, The Verge said that while Flash is already being seen as inefficient, it has come under sustained assault in recent months.

"Flash has not had an excellent safety record in general, but major security vulnerabilities in the software, uncovered after the Hacking Team leak earlier in July, have amplified calls for its death," it said— Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
