How ‘Lucifer’ star Tom Ellis pulled off those double scenes on Season 5

“Lucifer” actor Tom Ellis did double duty on Season 5, and fans who already binge-watched the series will know the reason why.

Spoiler alert: Last season ended with a soul-crushing cliff-hanger wherein Lucifer says goodbye to his beloved Detective Chloe Decker before returning to his post as King of Hell.

Season 5 picks up with Lucifer returning to LA, but something about him seems off. It turns out that Lucifer’s troublemaking twin brother, Michael, has decided to take over his brother’s life on Earth.

Not to worry, Lucifer eventually hears about it and the audience sees what happens when the Devil finds out that someone has been playing with his toys.

Since show runners Tom Henderson and Ildy Modrovich gave us not one but two handsome devils this season, we asked them how they pulled off all those scenes where Tom Ellis appears as both Michael and Lucifer.

“We had an amazing actor named Phil Kruse, who had a similar build/look to Tom, but most importantly, could hold his own opposite him,” Henderson told GMA News Online in an email.

“So Tom would act opposite Phil, and then they would switch roles. It’s a bit of a thankless job, because Phil’s work is erased in the final cut, but also there he’s in every moment, because he’s the one Tom’s reacting to and acting against, even if you never see it,” he added.

Henderson also shared that while Kruse played a big part in all those incredible fight scenes, but Tom also “worked his ass off.”

“It was incredible to watch him toggle between Lucifer and Michael at times, almost like he had a split personality,” the creator said.

“One of the things we’re most excited about this season is viewers seeing Tom show off just how damn good he is,” he added.

Apart from two Lucifers, there are plenty more reasons for fans to give Season 5 a play.

If you must know, there’s one scene where Lucifer speaks Tagalog. There’s also a special noir episode that will answer a lot of questions.
