'Harry Potter' series update: Kit Harrington in, Nicholas Hoult out as Gilderoy Lockhart

Kit Harrington will replace Nicholas Hoult to play Gilderoy Lockhart in the upcoming Harry Potter series.

According to Deadline, Nicholas had to leave due to scheduling issues.

"HBO had to work around two pre-existing Hoult projects; when filming of the Gilderoy Lockhard scenes had to shift within the Season 2 production schedule, the was no longer feasible," Deadline said.

When HBO reached out to the "Game of Thrones" star, he was "excited to take over the role," Deadline continued.

Kit is no stranger to the role. He actually voiced Gilderoy Lockheart in the "Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions," which was released late 2025.

Joining the HBO adaptation of "Harry Potter" marks Kit Harrington's third HBO series. He famously played Jon Snow on "Game of Thrones," and became a regular in the cult HBO series "Industry."

Meanwhile, Nicholas s best known for playing Lex Luthor in “Superman,” as well as roles in “The Great,” “The Menu,” and “Nosferatu.”

“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” stars Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout.

First announced in 2023, the "Harry Potter" series is an adaptation of the wildly famous "Harry Potter" book series by JK Rowling, first adapted into eight films. — LA, GMA News
