NBA: Orlando Magic narrow coach search to three; former player Jacque Vaughn leads the pack

The Orlando Sentinel's Josh Robbins reports that their local team, the Orlando Magic, have narrowed their coaching search to three names, with San Antonio Spurs assistant and former player Jacque Vaughn as the front-runner. The Magic fired head coach Stan Van Gundy last May and have gone through the draft and most of free agency without the input of a coach. Magic CEO Alex Martins told the Sentinel, "We're not going to comment on the process and where it stands," but the paper said that Vaughn had been brought back for a second interview. The other two candidates are Philadelphia 76ers associate head coach Michael Curry, and Phoenix Suns development coach Lindsey Hunter. Both Curry and Hunter are also former players in the NBA. Vaughn wrapped up his career with a bench role in San Antonio, before transitioning the next season into an assistant coach position for the Spurs' Gregg Popovich. He also played the 2002-03 season with Orlando, and finished with career averages of 4.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists.   Making the choice of head coach complicated is the team's unresolved situation with star center Dwight Howard. The team was heavily involved in talks with the Brooklyn Nets, the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Lakers, but have since cooled off on the process. It is thus not known if it is a requirement that the new hire be able to handle Howard and his on-again, off-again commitment to the team. - AMD, GMA News
