PBA: Purefoods beats Barako Bull but misses twice-to-beat bonus in playoffs

Purefoods ended their elimination round with a 99-83 victory over Barako Bull at Cuneta Astrodome on Tuesday, but the Hotshots are already out of contention for the twice-to-beat edge into the Philippine Cup playoffs.

The defending Grand Slam champions finished with a 6-5 card, but the Hotshots missed the top six due to quotient. The team will be in a three-way tie with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and the winner of Tuesday night's game between GlobalPort and Meralco, but will fall to seventh place due to inferior quotient after getting blown out by the Gin Kings during Manila Clasico earlier in the eliminations.

"I've been very vocal in the past that I think it's a great disservice to teams getting knocked out because of quotient," said Purefoods coach Tim Cone. "I think it's a bad rule, a bad set up. I think it's a really unfair setup."

Under the tournament format for the 2015 Philippine Cup, the top two teams get an automatic seat in the semifinals while the bottom two get knocked out of the playoffs.

The eight middle teams will slug it out for the last two semifinals spots, with the top four having a twice-to-beat edge. Any tie for positioning will be broken by quotient.

"The whole idea is reward the best teams, but you can't determine it just by quotient," he added. "Quotient doesn't decide who's better who's worse."

Purefoods, which acquired Energy's big man Mick Pennisi just before the match, pulled away in the second quarter to cruise to the victory, leading by as many as 18 points.

Pennisi got exchanged for Isaac Holstein and Ronnie Matias, but he proved a huge loss as Barako missed his steady presence in the paint and his sweet stroke on the three-point line.
