PBA: Tim Cone likens 'underrated' Alex Mallari to Rain or Shine's Gabe Norwood

Marc Pingris, James Yap, and PJ Simon have long been known as the Star Hotshots' Big Three, but another player in the roster has caught the attention of head coach Tim Cone: Alex Mallari.

The winningest coach in the PBA has constantly been impressed by his southpaw guard, who has become a regular starter because of his reliability in defense.

Despite being lesser known compared to his superstar teammates, Mallari is having a great conference so far in the Governors' Cup, averaging 10.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and three assists for the Hotshots.

"I've said this about different players through the years but I think right now, Alex is the most underrated defensive player in the league," Cone said.

The Hotshots coach even compared him to Rain or Shine wingman Gabe Norwood, who was one of the best stoppers in the national team Gilas Pilipinas.

"He's very Gabe Norwood-like, but he's a little bit quicker, maybe not quite as athletic, but he can guard multiple positions," he said. "He shines in our defense."

Mallari, meanwhile, said he is honored by the praise from his coach.

"It's a big compliment because Gabe can do a lot. It's what I try to do though, but that's all I can contribute to this team the most," said the guard, who scored nine points including a huge layup down the stretch against Barangay Ginebra on Sunday.

"A compliment like that is a highest regard at this level," he added. - RAF, GMA News
