Tab Baldwin no longer part of TNT coaching staff; to focus on Ateneo, SBP roles

Tab Baldwin is no longer part of the TNT KaTropa coaching staff.

In a statement sent to the media on Thursday, the team said Baldwin will focus on his coaching duties for the Ateneo Blue Eagles and his role as program director of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

The transition was decided "way before the lockdown," TNT team manager Gabby Cui said.

"The team is adapting well to the system of Coach Bong Ravena and Team Consultant Mark Dickel. We would like to thank Coach Tab and wish him well," he added.

The development comes after the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) slapped a P75,000 fine and 3-game suspension to the American-Kiwi coach due to his comments that were deemed "detrimental to the league."

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial also confirmed the move by TNT.

"Sinabihan ako ng management ng Monday evening, na-receive namin 'yung letter ng Tuesday," Marcial said in a phone call with GMA News Online.

Baldwin drew flak for comments he made in a podcast about the "tactical immaturity" of local coaches and the officiating and format of the PBA.

Several Ateneo alumni and businessmen pledged to shoulder Baldwin's fine, but the three-time UAAP champion coach turned them down as he believes the money will be of more benefit to those who are in need. —MGP, GMA News
