SBP to tap best PBA, UAAP, NCAA players in World Cup buildup

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has secured the full support of the PBA and top collegiate leagues UAAP and NCAA as the national team seek to form the best team for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

The basketball federation on Monday conducted a board meeting where they tackled the nationals' roadmap for the global conclave, which the country will host alongside Japan and Indonesia.

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes had presented his plans in the meeting, which include identifying top players from the country's three major leagues who are eyed to suit up in the World Cup Asian Qualifiers, 2023 SEA Games, and the World Cup.

PBA earlier said it is adjusting the schedule for Season 48, where they will feature just two conferences.

"As for the PBA, Asia’s pioneering professional league is also going all out in supporting the SBP and Gilas Pilipinas. The PBA will only stage two conferences next season to give way for Gilas Pilipinas’ preparation for the World Cup so that the team will be able to train for three months to build chemistry and familiarity," read the statement.

"The UAAP and NCAA have also committed to make sure that players selected from their leagues will be able to join the national team for the same period."

Meanwhile, SBP president Al Panlilio reiterated his call for unity as the basketball body is not just eyeing great showing from the national team but also a successful hosting of the World Cup.

“We only have 389 days from the actual tip-off and I do appeal to all the stakeholders in basketball to come together and really unify in this effort,” said Panlilio.
