UAAP: ADMU vs UP preview and live-scoring

The latest iteration of the "Battle of Katipunan" kicks off Thursday, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, when the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles take on the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons for the first time in UAAP Season 75. The Blue Eagles (3-1) are coming off a 71-61 win over their rivals, the De La Salle University Green Archers. Like in their sole loss so far though, against the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, the Eagles were unable to protect an early lead, allowing their opponents to catch up. Fortunately for Ateneo this time, they managed to right their ship at the end and come away with the victory.

By contrast, the Fighting Maroons (0-3) have been the ones doing the catching up, shredding an early deficit versus the Adamson University Soaring Falcons to put themselves in a position to win late. UP actually had the last shot of the game, with Alvin Padilla going for the win, down two. His contested shot failed to connect however, keeping them winless so far. Like their previous game versus NU, UP managed to be competitive late, but lacked the firepower to completely overhaul the lead.

While Ateneo is no doubt the favorite heading into this game, they will likely be reminded of the last time they were defeated by UP, when they too were heavily favored, only to be dispatched 68-58 back in the first round of Season 72. To pull off a similar upset, UP's defense will have to come into play early. The Blue Eagles put up the most points per game, 75.8, while UP's offense is second to last at 61.7 points per game. That means they can't get allow themselves to simply trade baskets as they'll come out on the losing end of that battle. Similarly, UP is at the bottom of the points in the paint category, scoring just 28.7 in the shaded area, while Ateneo is on top, at 39.5. - AMD, GMA News Season 74 history lesson:
