UAAP: Bo Perasol named Blue Eagles head coach; MVP reconciles with Ateneo

(Updated 9:03am) Former Powerade Tigers head coach Bo Perasol has been named the new mentor of the UAAP's Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, the school announced in a press release.

The choice of Perasol came on the heels of a reconciliation between Ateneo and benefactor Manuel V. Pangilinan, following the latter's decision a few months ago to 'disengage' from the university.

Fr Jett Villarin SJ, president of Ateneo, said in the release, "Over the past few days, Mr. Manuel V. Pangilinan (MVP) and I have been meeting in an effort to move forward and create a more open and constructive partnership.

"On the specific issue of the Head Coach of our Men's Varsity Basketball Team, MVP offered to arrange for me to meet with Coach Bo Perasol, so that we could reconsider our mutual termination of an earlier agreement....With the affirmation and support of the Search Committee, I am pleased to announce that Coach Bo shall be the Head Coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles beginning 1 December 2012."

Villarin added that MVP and the MVP Sports Foundation have agreed to make a "significant donation" to Ateneo's Sports Endowment Fund.

Last October, Perasol and Ateneo had agreed to part ways "amicably" due to Pangilinan's withdrawal of support. That led to Ateneo considering other options, such as current Alaska Aces assistant Alex Compton. Other candidates included assistants Sandy Arespacochaga and Jamike Jarin.

Prior to the start of the season, Ateneo announced that Norman Black was resigning to assume the role of head coach of the PBA's Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters. Before leaving however, Black piloted the Blue Eagles to their fifth straight UAAP championship.

Perasol is best known for leading the Powerade Tigers to the Finals of the 2011-12 PBA Philippine Cup despite finishing in eighth place with a 6-8 record.

Amidst several trades that shipped out key components of his Finals run though, Perasol proceeded to go 4-5 in the Commissioner's and Governors Cup, missing the postseason both times.

Powerade was later purchased by businessman Mikee Romero, who renamed the team as the GlobalPort Batang Pier. Perasol then asked to be released from his contract, and was granted it, leading to Glenn Capacio filling the vacancy.

Ateneo next season will have Kiefer Ravena returning, but questions abound regarding his supporting cast, following the graduation of five players, including 7'0" Greg Slaughter, two-time Finals MVP Nico Salva, and reserves Tonino Gonzaga, Justin Chua, and Oping Sumalinog. - AMD, GMA News
