Still sans key personnel, the University of the East Red Warriors will try to arrest their slide, but the red-hot De La Salle University Green Archers will definitely make it difficult for them, when the two squads clash, Wednesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Round one encounter

Normally known as a Roi Sumang-centric squad, especially down the stretch, the DLSU Green Archers got a taste of UE's depth, after the latter built a 10-point lead, 68-58, 8:30 left in the game.

Seven straight by big man Chris Javier halved his side's deficit, 73-68, before Roi Sumang scored back-to-back baskets to equalize. After scores by Arnold Van Opstal and Almond Vosotros sandwiched two charities by Charles Mammie, reserve guards Dan Alberto and Ralf Olivares went to town, scoring UE's last 11 points, en route to an 85-83 thriller.

UE outlook

On the bright side, UE will get defensive stopper Lord Casjeros back after a one-game suspension. However, Charles Mammie will still be out, while Ralf Olivares will start his two-game ban. That's a shame, because Mammie dominated his La Salle counterparts with a double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds, while Olivares came up clutch with eight points, six in the final minute of the game.

For UE to win, they'll need Chris Jaiver and Dan Alberto, two guys who also had fine outings versus La Salle, to embrace their extra playing time and try to better the already big performances they had in round one (16 points and 5 boards for Javier, nine markers for Alberto)

However, a last-minute announcement by the UAAP board saw Mammie cleared to play.

DLSU outlook

The Green Archers out-lasted their arch-rivals ADMU Blue Eagles thanks to a Jeron Teng game-winner on their last possession, but more noticeable was their lack of production from big men Norbert Torres and Arnold Van Opstal (10 points, 4-of-10 shooting, five rebounds, four turnovers), despite playing against a team bereft of height. The big man who did make his presence felt though was Jason Perkins, with 13 points, 15 boards and two swats.

In fact, Perkins finding his preseason form has been key to the Archers' upswing in round two. After norming 10.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in 27.1 minutes in the first seven games, he's norming 14.0 points and 11.5 boards in 30.5 minutes now. Odds are, he'll be reminded that versus UE in round one he had just four points in 19 minutes, and with Mammie out, he could very well take over this game.
