UAAP: Ateneo survives late UP scare as Reyes misses clutch free throws
By MARISSE PANALIGAN, GMA News

Ateneo de Manila University escaped gritty University of the Philippines, 70-69, after Maroons guard Mikee Reyes missed both free throws with one second left Wednesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
The Eagles improved to a 9-3 card in the UAAP standings with the victory, while the Maroons suffered yet another heartbreak defeat for a 1-11 card.
Reyes scored 15 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, including the trey at the 1:05 mark that put UP within one point. JR Gallarza, who was in tears after the game, finished with 18 points. Rookie Diego Dario and Dave Moralde added 13 and 11 points.
Kiefer Ravena led Ateneo with 18 points, five rebounds, and seven assists, while Nico Elorde scored 12 points and seven boards. Thirdy Ravena, Gideon Babilonia, and Arvin Tolentino added eight points each.
Moralde waxed hot for 11 points in the first quarter, nailing his shots and drawing fouls including a four-point play to keep UP close, 16-15. Dario took the reins in the second, but Ateneo pulled away from a string of charities despite only scoring one field goal the entire frame, 29-24.

Ateneo was caught in a dry spell at the perimeter in the first half, scoring none against UP's 15. The Eagles scored more in the paint, 10-2, and were lifted by their 19-of-22 free throws.
The Eagles were ahead by as much as 13 points in the third quarter, 44-31, but Gallarza and Reyes took charge to keep the Maroon within striking distance going into the fourth, 56-48.
Reyes then exploded in the fourth as UP pulled stops to Ateneo's offense. With barely a second left in the game, he pulled up for a triple but stepped on the line as he was fouled by Chris Newsome.
