Alex Eala through to singles semis, doubles finals in Italy tilt


Filipina tennis star Alex Eala continued her strong run in the JA Trofeo Bonfiglio tournament in Italy with two big victories on Friday.

Eala, the No. 1 seed in both the girls' singles and girls' doubles draws, advanced to the semifinal round in the singles tournament and will be playing for the title in the doubles after the most recent playing day.

She defeated Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4, in the quarterfinal round of the singles draw before teaming up with American Madison Sieg to defeat the Russian pair of Kira Pavlova and Diana Shnaider, 6-3, 6-4 in the doubles semis to book a place in the finals.

In the singles semifinals, Eala will face off against Mirra Andreeva of Russia for the chance to move onto the finals.

Later on Saturday’s order of play, it will be familiar foe in Costoulas and her Croatian teammate Lucija Ciric Bagaric standing in Eala and Sieg’s way in the doubles finals.

In June, Eala won the doubles title in the French Open but bowed out in the second round in both singles and doubles in Wimbledon earlier this month.
