Margielyn Didal happy to see more LGBTQ+ athletes compete in Olympics

Margielyn Didal joined her fellow Filipino Olympian Nesthy Petecio in showing pride for LGBT athletes competing on the most prestigious stage in sports.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Didal said she was glad to see members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community in action at the Tokyo Olympics.

"That makes me happy and I'm part of it and I have a girlfriend," said the skateboarding star, who finished seventh place in the women's street last week.

Didal also said she is thankful to her parents, who have accepted her for who she is.

"I'm just thankful for them because they have accepted me. In sports, gender does not really matter," she said.

Petecio, who just delivered a silver medal for the Philippines on Tuesday, also said she is proud to represent the LGBTQ community on the Olympic stage.

"I'm super proud to be a member of the community and I'm not denying that. Whatever gender we are, as long as we have dreams, we should continue fighting," she said in Filipino.
