Leylah Fernandez dispatches Romanian foe to open Monterrey run

Canadian Leylah Fernandez dispatched Jaqueline Cristian of Romania, 6-3, 7-5, to open her campaign at the 2025 Monterrey Open in Mexico.

Fernandez is coming off back-to-back early exits in Montreal and Cincinnati, where she lost in the first and second rounds, respectively.

Just this July, Fernandez bagged the Washington Open title after defeating Anna Kalinskaya in the finals.

Fernandez, who has Filipino roots through her mother's side of the family, won the Monterrey Open in 2021 and 2022.

She will now await the winner of the match between Mexico’s Victoria Rodriguez and Slovakia’s Rebecca Šramková to determine her Round of 16 opponent.
