Who is Renata Zarazua? Alex Eala's opening round foe at Wimbledon
Alex Eala is once again stepping onto the grass courts of Wimbledon, returning for her second stint in the prestigious Grand Slam event on Tuesday against a Mexican rival.
The Filipina tennis ace enters as the 29th seed ---her first-ever seeding at the tournament---and will face Renata Zarazua in the Round of 128 as the two players face off against each other for the second time in their careers.
The 28-year-old Zarazua is currently ranked no. 75 by the WTA and peaked at a high of No. 51 in November 2024.
In the Grand Slams, Zarazua reached the Round of 64 at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, where she opened her campaign with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Yanina Wickmayer before losing to Amanda Anisimova in the Round of 64.
Zarazua, who previously defeated Eala in a WTA100 event in North Carolina in 2024, is coming off a stint at the Bad Homburg Open, where she braved through the qualifying round before bowing out of the tourney with a Round of 32 loss to Wang Xinyu, 6-1, 6-2.
Similarly, Eala also exited the Bad Homburg Open early with a Round of 32 setback against Elise Mertens, 6-3, 6-3.
Zarazua holds three WTA125 titles after winning the Montevido Open, Charleston 125, and Austin Challenger.
While they have already faced off on the court, Eala and Zarazua have also teamed up in the past when they linked up during the 2025 French Open doubles. In that run, Eala and Zarazua made it to the second round, where they eventually lost to Olga Danilovic and Anastasia Potapova.
Eala is hoping to have a deeper run this time as she carries momentum from her impressive grass-court swing so far, which includes a second career title at the Birmingham Open.
