Jessica Pegula, Iva Jovic among Day 1 winners at Wimbledon

World No. 4 Jessica Pegula and No. 16 Iva Jovic were among the women who advanced to the second round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships on Monday.

Pegula cruised to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over world No. 92 Darja Vidmanova of the Czech Republic to move into the next round.

Jovic, meanwhile, earned her first Wimbledon main-draw win after a 7-6(1), 6-0 victory over world No. 37 Jaqueline Cristian.

Jovic is a familiar name to Filipino tennis fans as they 18-year-old recently battled Alex Eala in the HSBC Championships Round of 16, with the American taking a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Another recent Eala opponent, Mananchaya Sawangkaew of Thailand, also advanced after a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 upset of No. 20 seed Maja Chwalinska, who struggled with an injury during the match. Eala defeated Sawangkaew in the quarterfinals en route to the WTA 125 Birmingham Open title earlier this month.

Others who advance to the next round were Jelena Ostapenko, Zhang Shuai, Wang Xinyu, and Zeynep Sonmez.
