Alex Eala, Nikola Bartunkova fall to Jelena Ostapenko, Sofia Kenin in Wimbledon doubles
Alexandra "Alex" Eala and Nikola Bartunkova bowed out of the Wimbledon women's doubles tournament after falling to the tandem of Jelena Ostapenko and Sofia Kenin, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round early Friday (Philippine time).
Eala and Bartunkova got off to a strong start, racing to a 3-0 lead before Ostapenko and Kenin won back-to-back games. Eala and Bartunkova responded by taking the next two games, while Ostapenko and Kenin managed one more as the Filipina-Czech pair secured the opening set.
The momentum shifted in the next two sets, however, as Ostapenko and Kenin took control to complete the comeback victory in one hour and 53 minutes.
The Latvian-American duo broke away for a 5-2 advantage in the second set after the score was tied at 2-2. Eala and Bartunkova claimed one more game, but Ostapenko and Kenin closed out the set to force a decider which they swept.
Before competing in doubles, Eala booked her place in the Wimbledon Round of 32 with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Maya Joint in the second round.
