Wimbledon 2026: Alex Eala and Jasmine Paolini

Alex Eala has a chance to prove her breakthrough win over Jasmine Paolini five months ago was no fluke as the Filipina tennis ace takes on the Italian star anew, this time with a place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on the line.

The 21-year-old Eala returns to the Centre Court as she continues her fairytale run on Monday night with world No. 17 Jasmine Paolini standing between her and a place in the Top 8.

But Eala isn't taking anything for granted. Although she holds a 1-0 head-to-head edge over Paolini, Eala had to withstand a late surge before closing out a 6-1, 7-6(5) victory in their only meeting at the Dubai Tennis Championships last February.

"I think she's a great player. She is a great fighter, especially. It was not an easy match in Dubai for me. And it will not be an easy match here either," Eala said last Saturday.

Both Eala and the 30-year-old Paolini are rolling in Wimbledon.

The 13th-seeded Paolini overcame a Set 1 debacle to eke out a 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 win against Robin Montgomery in the opening round before sweeping Viktorija Golubic and Maria Sakkari in the Round of 64 and 32, respectively, arranging a blockbuster showdown against Eala.

Eala, on the other hand, has turned many heads during her dream run so far. She first dominated Renata Zarazua before securing a redemption victory over Maya Joint in the Round of 64. Eala's biggest victory came in the Round of 32, dethroning world No. 3 Iga Swiatek with a hard-fought 7-6(9), 6-2 stunner.

Although she anticipates a tough battle against Paolini, Eala remains focused on earning the first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance of her career.

Unlike Eala, Paolini has been here before and knows what it takes to thrive on Grand Slam tennis' biggest stage. In 2024, Paolini enjoyed a breakthrough Grand Slam season, reaching the Wimbledon final before falling to Barbora Krejcikova in three sets. She also finished runner-up at the French Open that year after losing in straight sets to Swiatek.

"But then again, every match is a different story. So I'm going to do my best to prepare for that one. And, you know, focus all my energy and in trying to improve and do better."
