Alex Eala dethrones Iga Swiatek in Wimbledon thriller, storms into Round of 16

Having already gone farther than any Filipino in the Grand Slam history, Alexandra "Alex" Eala proved there is still no ceiling to what she can reach.

Eala dug deep in Set 1 before completing a stunning 7(11)-6(9), 6-2 upset of defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland in a grueling Wimbledon Round of 32 clash on the iconic Centre Court on Saturday.

The victory not only ended Swiatek's title defense but also propelled the 21-year-old Filipina into the coveted Round of 16, which now serves as the deepest Grand Slam run of her young career.

Even after knocking out the defending champion, Eala remained gracious and praised the six-time Grand Slam winner Swiatek.

"I don't know how to describe it. I mean, I've been to the second week of a slam and it's amazing for me. Iga is a phenomenal player and a really nice person," Eala said after the grueling two-hour and 15-minute match.

"So I'm really grateful to be able to share Center Court with her at Wimbledon nonetheless."

Errors by Swiatek to end Games 7 and 8 allowed Eala to reach match point in the opening set, 5-3, but the Polish star roared back and eventually forced a 6-all deadlock and the tiebreak.

It was another grueling exchange in the tiebreak with Eala racing to a 5-2 cushion before Swiatek mounted another rampage to drag the Filipina ace to a 9-all stalemate. Another pair of forehand errors from Swiatek handed Eala the Set 1, which lasted for almost one hour and 30 minutes.

Eala continued to flex her might on Swiatek, whom she defeated once iin the 2025 Miami Open, as the Filipina seized a massive 4-0 lead to kick things off in Set 2.

However, Swiatek staged a fightback by winning the next two games.

Any hopes of a comeback, though, quickly faded as Eala took Game 7 in commanding fashion then outlasted Swiatek in a grueling Game 8 featuring six deuces and unleashed a left-handed forehand winner to close it out.

The win set up Eala with a Round of 16 clash with Italian standout Jasmine Paolini.
