Pilipinas Sepak Takraw aims to build on recent success ahead of King's Cup, Asian Games
The Philippines reached the podium in sepak takraw at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, winning two bronze medals to end a 33-year medal drought in the sport.
Building on its historic double-bronze finish at the Asian Games, Pilipinas Sepak Takraw carried its momentum into last year's Southeast Asian Games, where both the men's and women's teams also claimed bronze medals.
"Masaya rin po kami na kami ang nagdala ng Pilipinas para makakuha ng medalya. Sobrang saya...lahat ng pagod, lahat ng sakripisyo nung time na ‘yun, nung moment na ‘yun is talagang nagbunga," player Jason Huerte said in Martin Javier's 24 Oras report aired Tuesday.
With renewed confidence, the Filipino contingent hopes to sustain its strong form when it competes in the King's Cup World Championship in Thailand before shifting its focus to the 2026 Asian Games in Japan this September.
"Meron kaming chance na makita at masubukan ulit 'yung program," Huerte said about their upcoming tourney. "Refinement kami kung ano 'yung kakulangan nung last na magiging tournament, preparation for Asian Games."
"Malaking bagay 'yung laro namin sa King's Cup kasi kumbaga tune up fight," coach Grendel Ilogon added.
Sepak takraw combines the aerial athleticism of volleyball with the footwork and ball control of soccer.
Each team consists of three players: the tekong, or server; the feeder; and the striker, who finishes the play. Success in the sport requires strong teamwork, leg strength, and precise ball control.
