EJ Obiena posts season best, bags silver in Madrid
Filipino Olympian and pole vaulter EJ Obiena posted his best performance of the outdoor season, clearing 5.85 meters to claim the silver medal at the Meeting Madrid in Spain.
Obiena needed two attempts to clear 5.85 meters after successfully clearing 5.50 and 5.75 meters on his first attempts. He skipped the 5.65- and 5.80-meter heights.
He then passed on 5.90 meters before failing to clear 5.95 meters in all three attempts.
Germany’s Bo Kanda Lita Baehre claimed the gold after clearing both 5.85 and 5.90 meters on his first attempts before also failing to clear 5.95 meters in three tries.
Portugal’s Pedro Buaro, meanwhile, settled for bronze after clearing 5.85 meters on his third attempt. He also attempted 5.90 meters but failed to clear the height in all three tries.
Prior to the Madrid meet, Obiena finished fourth in Athens on July 5 with a clearance of 5.81 meters and sixth in Budapest with 5.80 meters.
He won his first outdoor title in Poland as he cleared 5.72 meters.
