Alex Eala's 2025 US Open: A look back at her historic Grand Slam run

The US Open has always been a special tournament for Alexandra “Alex” Eala.

In 2022, Eala won the US Open girls’ singles title at just 17 years old.

Since then, Eala has continued to develop and hone her skills until in 2025, she reached the US Open main draw for the first time.

Here’s a look back at her short but historic US Open stint in 2025.

First round: Alex Eala def. Clara Tauson, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(11)

Eala made history by becoming the first Filipina to win a main-draw singles match at a Grand Slam after defeating Denmark’s Clara Tauson, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(11).

Ranked No. 75 at the time, Eala pulled off an upset against the world No. 14.

Down 5-1 in the third set, Eala regrouped and showed her determination, winning five straight games to take a 6-5 lead. Tauson, however, fought back and forced a tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Eala took an early 8-4 lead before the Danish player rallied to score four consecutive points. The two battled neck and neck, but Eala ultimately rode the momentum and support from the crowd to clinch the win.

Second round: Cristina Bucsa def. Alex Eala, 6-4, 6-3

In the second round, however, Cristina Bucsa displayed poise and experience against the younger Eala, ending the Filipina’s historic run in straight sets.

The loss marked the end of Eala’s short but memorable stint in the 2025 US Open.

Now, world No. 18 Eala has a series of activities lined up at the US Open, including the mixed doubles tournament with Felix Auger-Aliassime, the Stars of the Open exhibition event with Iva Jovic, and eventually the women’s singles tournament, where she is expected to be seeded by virtue of her ranking.
