John Vic de Guzman pledges to get better after being named national volleyball team captain anew

For John Vic de Guzman, being named team captain for the national men's volleyball team anew is an indication that he should not sit on his laurels.

The 6-foot-2 opposite spiker said it instead meant he should work harder in order to repay the trust given to him by the coaching staff and as well as his teammates.

"I will make sure that I get better to prove that they were not wrong in giving me the trust to be team captain again," de Guzman told GMA News Online.

"Being tapped team captain means I should help the team in every way I can to make sure that we're solid."

The NCAA product out of College of Saint Benilde is no stranger to being a skipper of the team. This is his third appointment to the post.

He was selected to captain the team that saw action in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore where they finished sixth among eight participating nations.

The Kapuso actor was also placed at the helm when the country hosted the 2019 edition of the biennial meet where he played a key role in the Filipinos' historic run to the silver medal.

And although the Vietnam SEAG won't push through this year due to pandemic, de Guzman was still chosen by head coach Dante Alinsunurin to be leader of the team.

De Guzman will be at the forefront of a team that was hardly changed from its previous composition as mainstays Jessie Lopez, Joshua Retamar, Mark Alfafara, Marck Espejo, Bryan Baguna, Josh Umandal, Rex Intal, Kim Malabunga, Francis Saura, and Ricky Marcos still made it to the pool, which was announced by the PNVF last May.

Completing the pool are Kim Dayadante, Ish Polvorosa, Angelo Almedras, Ysay Marasigan, Joeven Dela Vega, John Paul Bugaoan, Lloyd Josafat, Jack Kaligking and Manuel Sumanguid.
