AVC Women's Cup: Alas Pilipinas fall short to Australia in five-set thriller
The Philippine women’s national volleyball team, Alas Pilipinas, fell short against Australia, 25-22, 23-25, 18-25, 25-15, 15-11, on Sunday in its second match of the AVC Women’s Cup in Candon City.
After forcing a deciding fifth set, Alas Pilipinas came within one point at 10-9 following a successful block-touch challenge. However, Australia responded with a 4-0 run to take control of the match.
The Philippines managed to score once more, but a service error by Kyle Negrito brought the Australians to match point. Alyssa Solomon kept Alas Pilipinas alive, but Australia sealed the victory on the next rally after winning a block touch challenge for the final point.
Caitlin O’Dea led Australia with 17 points built on 14 attacks and three blocks, while Lara Maric added 16 points from 11 attacks, three blocks, and two aces.
Alyssa Solomon paced the Philippines with 23 points on 22 attacks and a block. Niña Ytang contributed 13 points, highlighted by nine attacks, three aces, and one block.
The Philippines dropped to a 1-1 record and will face Kyrgyzstan on Monday.
