PNP: 16 dead in 46 validated election-related incidents since Jan. 12, 2025


The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday, Election Day, said a total of 16 people were killed in 46 validated election-related incidents since the start of the election period on January 12, 2025.

In a press briefing, PNP public information office chief Police Colonel Randulf Tuaño said authorities have yet to validate 31 suspected election-related incidents.

Despite the reported violence and delays, Tuaño said the conduct of the May 2025 midterm election has been generally peaceful so far.

The PNP earlier said that as of 1 p.m., a total of four people died while 12 others were injured halfway through Election Day.

Two of the fatalities were from a shooting incident in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) involving a municipal councilor candidate and a brother of a barangay chairman.

The other two deaths were reported in an incident in Negros Island Region where eight persons were also injured.

A total of 12 incidents have been reported on Election Day so far in Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, BARMM, Negros Island Region, Metro Manila, and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

These incidents were armed encounters, shooting incidents, automated counting machine delays, robbery, and fire, according to the PNP.

The early voting hours for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women were set from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. but they can still vote beyond 7 a.m. and until precincts close, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Meanwhile, the regular voting hours were set from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. —LDF, GMA Integrated News
