MMDA, PDEA hold random drug testing for province-bound bus drivers
To further ensure the safety of Filipinos bound for the provinces during Holy Week, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Tuesday started random drug testing for bus drivers.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said this aims to make sure the bus drivers do not lose control of the vehicles due to the influence of drugs, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported.
At the Araneta Bus Terminal in Quezon City, teams from the MMDA and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency had drivers fill out consent forms before taking 60-ml samples of their urine.
The screening takes five to 10 minutes and may require a confirmatory test.
However, drivers who test positive in the screening will not be allowed to drive.
Filipinos are expected to rush to the provinces this week so they can spend Holy Week with their families. The exodus is expected to peak starting Wednesday.
Meanwhile, other bus firms said they are now on "Semana Santa mode," advising passengers to avoid the crowd by taking trips before Wednesday noon.
"We are on Oplan Semana Santa mode. If you plan to avoid the crowd, travel today till before lunch tomorrow. After this, (there will be) plenty (of) people already," one of the bus firms, Victory Liner Inc., said on its Twitter account. —KG, GMA News
