Letran vows to cooperate in probe of kidnapping case involving students

The Colegio De San Juan De Letran on Monday promised to cooperate in the investigation of a supposed kidnap-for-ransom incident involving several students.

"The Colegio remains committed to the just resolution of this case, to cooperating with police efforts, to extending appropriate help to the family of the alleged kidnap victim, and to the protection and promotion of the welfare of our students," Letran said in a statement.

Operatives from the Philippine National Police - Anti-Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) rescued student Denzhel Gomez from his kidnappers, most of whom were supposedly his classmates from Letran.

Police arrested four of the suspects: Jhulius Atabay, Ferdinand Dela Vega Jr., Ralph Emmanuel Camaya, and Justine Mahipus. Six others are still at large.

According to the PNP-AKG, Gomez and suspect Atabay were abducted at around 9:30 p.m. on August 1 at LRT Central Station in Manila by armed men, who then got into a Toyota Innova.

The suspects then released Atabay, who told police that he received a call from the kidnappers, asking P30 million in exchange for Gomez's release.

However, said the police, during the investigation they got Atabay to admit that he was actually the mastermind behind the kidnapping and that he knew the exact location where the suspects brought the victim. — Anna Felicia Bajo/BM, GMA News
