Authorities recovered suspected decades-old explosives at a taxiway in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Complex, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday.

In a statement, PNP said its Aviation Security Group Explosives Ordnance Disposal and K9 Unit recovered “Explosive Remnants of War” composed of six general-purpose bombs weighing 50 pounds each at around 2:50 p.m. on Sunday.

PNP said the heavily corroded bombs were confirmed to be inert.

During follow-up clearing operations, authorities also recovered four bombs weighing over 50 pounds and 18 bombs weighing 25 pounds.

Police said the bombs were all assessed as inert and no longer posed an active explosive danger.

The recovered bombs were secured and transported to the Aviation Security Unit headquarters for documentation and safekeeping.

“We assure the public that every report of possible threat is taken seriously and addressed with urgency and care,” PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said.—Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA News
