Maymay, Habagat disrupt classes, flood parts of NCR

The combined effects of Tropical Storm Maymay and the Southwest Monsoon disrupted classes and caused flooding in Metro Manila on Wednesday.

In a "24 Oras" report from Oscar Oida, several parents complained about schools being suspended later in the afternoon, when the kids were already in class.

“‘Pag ganyan po sana po mas maaga pa po mag-suspend na po para di na papasukin mga bata…kawawa din po mga bata mababasa,” parent Jovy Adrales said.

(If it is like this, I hope that they suspend earlier so that the kids do not go to school… they are pitiful when they get wet.)

There was zero visibility in several parts of EDSA at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday. There were also gutter-level floods in the northbound lane when vehicles exited the Quezon Avenue flyover.

Meanwhile, strong winds and rain were reported at 9th Avenue in Caloocan City around the same time.

PAGASA weather division chief Juanito Galang said that the yellow rainfall warning over the metro indicated that rains could range from 50 mm to 100 mm, but some areas could experience rains as heavy as 200 mm.

Meanwhile, Angat Dam levels improved but are still below normal levels despite persistent rains from Maymay and the monsoon, according to PAGASA Hydrometeorology Division Chief Socrates Paat.

“Patuloy yung pag-angat ng elevation ng Angat Dam pero sa nakita natin ay masyadong minimal ang pagdagdag,” Paat said.

(The levels of the Angat Dam continue to rise, but from what we see, this is too minimal.)

Paat said that Angat was still 23 meters short of its normal levels. However, PAGASA Deputy Administrator for Research and Development Marcelino Villafuerte said that Metro Manila already has other sources of water other than Angat Dam, including the Wawa Dam. —Jean Mangaluz/LDF, GMA News
