La Mesa Dam breaches spilling level amid Habagat rains

The La Mesa Dam in Quezon City has breached its spilling level on Monday afternoon amid the rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, the state weather bureau PAGASA said.

As of 5 p.m., the water level at the dam reached 80.17 meters, exceeding its spilling level of 80.15 meters. PAGASA warned that excess floodwaters in the dam will overflow after exceeding its normal high water level.

"Waters from La Mesa Dam are expected to affect the low-lyung areas along the Tullahan River from Quezon City (Fairview, Forest Hills Subdivision, Quirino Highway, Sta. Quiteria, and San Bartolome), Caloocan City, Valenzuela (North Expressway, La Huerta Subd.), Malabon and Navotas," said PAGASA in its advisory.

All residents living in the said areas, especially near river banks, are advised to take appropriate actions, the state weather bureau added.

Caloocan is among the cities where a red rainfall warning was issued on Monday afternoon. Serious flooding is possible in the said area.

On the other hand, orange warning, which meant threatening floods, is hoisted over Quezon City, Valenzuela, Malabon, and Navotas. –NB, GMA News
