Ex-Batangas gov Leviste makes pitch for Binay

Former Batangas governor and paroled convict Jose Antonio Leviste on Friday expressed his support for Vice President Jejomar Binay and Senator Gregorio Honasan and their senatorial candidates as he criticized the Aquino administration for "destroying" the country.

"Hindi maaring hindi ako magkusa na tumulong sapagkat si Vice President ay kasa-kasama sa Makati," Leviste said in a campaign rally of the United Nationalist Alliance in Bauan, Batangas.

While performing magic tricks, he said that it was the Aquino administration that destroyed the country.

He also urged residents of Bauan to vote for Binay and other UNA candidates.

Walang magmamalasakit sa Batangas kundi isang Batangueno," he said.

Binay's father hails from Bauan, Batangas.

Leviste was charged with murder for the 2007 shooting of his long-time aide Rafael de las Alas. He was convicted in January 2009 for the lesser offense of homicide, with the court saying the killing of De las Alas did not appear to be premeditated.

He was punished to serve a minimum sentence of six years and a maximum sentence of 12 years, but it was slashed to just a little under five years after he earned "good conduct time allowance."

The Board of Pardon and Parole approved Leviste's parole application in November 2013, allowing him to be released from New Bilibid Prison the following month.

President Aquino questioned the grant of parole on Leviste when he was charged with evasion of service of sentenced for “escaping” from prison in May 2011.

The President, however, did not reverse the parole grant.APG/KBK, GMA News
