Legarda welcomes Pia Cayetano's inclusion in Duterte transition team

Sen. Loren Legarda on Friday welcome the inclusion of Sen. Pia Cayetano in the transition team of presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte, saying she believes that the senator would help make the next administration gender-sensitive in its approach to governance.

“It is important that the incoming administration gives priority to gender equality. We need leaders who will make sure not only gender equality, but also gender equity in the government’s policies and programs,” she said in a statement.

She added both men and women should be given equal opportunities and access to resources.

"But we must do so fairly and based on gender-specific strengths and challenges,” said Legarda, who authored several women empowerment and gender-sensitive laws.

She further said the government must build on gains and continue to provide equal support to men and women in reaching their full potential as individuals and as citizens participating in nation building.

"A gender-sensitive administration is most welcome,” the senator said.

She said the Philippines is a leading nation in Asia, and even in the world, in closing the gender gap. She said in the annual Global Gender Gap Report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Philippines ranks first in Asia, and always at the top ten countries globally.

Duterte's camp earlier said the presumptive president is eyeing a young and well-balanced Cabinet, just like that of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Spokesman Peter Laviña said Duterte is considering sectors such as the indigenous people, youth and women be represented in his Cabinet.

“He wanted young people. We are also sensitive on gender issues so hopefully maraming babae,” Laviña said. — APG, GMA News
