The Philippine National Police-Anti-Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) has launched a separate investigation on the missing P5 million ransom money paid by the family of slain Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo.
"May isang section kami na tumututok doon [sa ransom money] kasi seemingly may nagsamantala," AKG director Senior Supt. Glenn Dumlao said in a press briefing Thursday.
"Separate [investigation iyan] from the abduction," he added.
Jee's widow has told investigators that she paid P5 million ransom money days after her husband was abducted from their home in Angeles City, Pampanga believing that he was still alive.
It was later learned that Jee was killed inside Camp Crame hours after he was abducted on October 18.
Dumlao said demanding ransom could be an afterthought of the abductors, allegedly led by SPO4 Ricky Sta. Isabel.
"Ang kidnap for ransom palagi habang buhay ang tao ay he is a duck that lays the golden egg, huwag mong papatayin. Kung papatayin mo agad, walang presyo yun. Proof of life kasi palagi ang tinatanong dyan," he said.
He did not directly answer the question if those who got the ransom were part of the group that abducted Jee.
"Parang may nagsamantala kasi all along itong mga involved na player sa pagkuha sabi nila ay hindi nila alam yan," he said.
Dumlao said they cannot pinpoint yet the motive for killing Jee.
"Lahat ng anggulo tinitingnan natin. It's worth looking into, we have to establish really yung motivation. Dami naming pinursue na motive ever since," he said. —KBK, GMA News
