PNP to launch sticker system for motorcycles in June

The Philippine National Police is planning to launch the sticker system for motorcyles in Luzon within this month to prevent shootings by "riding-in-tandem" gunmen.

PNP Director General Oscar Albayalde said Thursday that the sticker system will be launched in Central Luzon (Region 3).

“'Pag maganda ‘yung naging resulta natin, then we'll bring it to other regions,” he said.

“By this month sa tingin ko malau-launch ‘yan...Probably sa Luzon area muna,” he added.

The country’s top cop said that the sticker solution will not be foolproof, but will beone of the strategies to combat the prevalence of motorcycle-riding suspects (MRS) who have taken advantage of the high-speed mobility provided by their vehicles.

”It’s just one way to probably prevent yung MRS. Pwede naman after ng inspection, na-carnap yung motorsiklo with the sticker already so hindi talaga foolproof ‘yon pero nakaka-prevent ito,” Albayalde said.

“At least kahit papaano' yung mga with criminal minds mahihirapan sila gumamit doon sa may sticker na ‘yon but it doesn't mean kasi na porket may sticker na you're free already from checkpoints or from being checked,“ he added.

The PNP is still working on the guidelines on how the sticker system will be implemented.

Data from the PNP Crime Information Reporting and Analysis System showed that at least 1,008 motorcycle-riding suspects are still at large.

It also showed that from October 11, 2017 to May 21, 2018, only 358 of this total have been identified.

At least twelve suspects were killed while 51 others were arrested during the same period.

The total number of shooting incidents reached 880, of which 812 were classified as murder and the rest homicide cases.

A total of 291 cases have been solved and cleared, the PNP said. Out of these cases, the police recorded 927 victims. — BM, GMA News
