Simply following loading, unloading rules could help ease traffic congestion —expert

The director of the University of the Philippines' National Center for Transportation Studies on Tuesday reminded the public to simply follow loading and unloading rules to ease traffic congestion and avoid road accidents during the holidays.

"Sa konteksto kasi natin, lalo pag Christmas, ang dami-daming biyahe, everybody is rushing. One of the more important part is very simple: follow proper loading and unloading. Because that is where you have a lot of congestion," Dr. Ma. Sheilah Napalang said in a forum on road safety.

For its part, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said clearing operations are done regularly to ease traffic problems in the metro amid the holiday rush.

MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago, however, noted that the agency needs assistance from local government units so it can properly enforce traffic rules and road safety regulations.

"'Yung clearing operations po natin tuloy-tuloy, naga-average po kami at least 100 vehicles being towed and 2,000 na ticketed para po sa illegal parking," Pialago said.

"Dapat po talaga na katuwang natin ang LGUs dito. May mga areas po talaga na hindi naman ho saklaw ng MMDA. Nakakapag-operate lang po tayo doon kapag sila ho ay nagre-request," she added.

The MMDA and mall operators already agreed to adjust business hours for the holiday season in anticipation of heavy traffic.

Pialago earlier said malls along EDSA, Libis, Marcos Highway and Commonwealth Avenue will open at 11 a.m. from November 5, 2018 to January 14, 2019. —KBK, GMA News
