Velasco vows ‘unconditional support’ for Sara if she runs for president

Speaker Lord Allan Velasco on Thursday vowed to support Davao Mayor Sara Duterte unconditionally should she decide to run in Eleksyon 2022.

“I will support her all the way,” Velasco was quoted as saying in a statement.

He also welcomed the President's daughter’s remark that she was open to run for president.

“I’ve said in the past, both in public and in private, that Mayor Inday Sara is very qualified to be the country’s next president. She can unify us and lead us forward,” he said.

Meanwhile, President Rodrigo Duterte said he was still against his daughter running for president to spare her from the "vagaries of politics."

For his part, the elder Duterte has said that he is considering running for vice president. He later said it was only "posturing" to avoid being a lame duck during his last year in office.

Though the Integrated Bar of the Philippines said this is not expressly prohibited, other officials have said Duterte’s vice presidential bid “goes against the spirit” of the Constitution.
