Motorists checked for guns, vax cards at Comelec checkpoints
Checkpoints have been installed in several areas nationwide, with the police in military checking motorists for firearms and proof of vaccination in the run-up to Eleksyon 2022.
The election period for the May presidential polls began on Sunday, and with it is a gun ban that will remain in effect until June 8, 2022.
In Jun Veneracion's report on "24 Oras" on Monday, security forces are also checked if the motorists and their passengers have vaccination cards, following the government's order to restrict the movement of people unvaccinated against COVID-19.
Two individuals have already been arrested in northern Metro Manila for possession of guns, while five were apprehended in Western Mindanao.
Those arrested might face imprisonment for at least a year to six years.
"Tuloy-tuloy po ang ating pagpapatupad nitong Comelec gun ban at iba pa pong checkpoint operations to make sure of the public's safety at 'yong ating pagtupad sa election duties," Philippine National Police chief Police General Dionardo Carlos said. — Ma. Angelica Garcia/BM, GMA News
