The Philippine National Police (PNP) recorded a 12% decline in major crime incidents nationwide following the implementation of intensified anti-criminality operations in high-risk areas.

PNP data from April 6 to May 6 showed that total focus crime incidents dropped from 3,047 to 2,684, or 363 fewer cases during the period.

Among the eight focus crimes monitored by the PNP, rape cases posted the steepest decline at 25.4%, falling from 519 cases to 387. Cases of physical injuries also dropped by 24.3%, from 489 to 370.

Homicide cases decreased by 14.1%, from 99 to 85, while both murder and robbery incidents posted identical declines of 7.4%.

Theft cases also went down by 5%, from 1,066 to 1,014 incidents.

Although no figures were provided, the PNP said motor vehicle theft cases remained “generally manageable” during the monitoring period.

The PNP launched its “Safer Cities” initiative in April, which seeks to strengthen police visibility, particularly in urban areas.

“The organization also reported sustained high performance in Crime Clearance Efficiency (CCE) and improved Crime Solution Efficiency (CSE) involving the eight focus crimes,” the PNP said in a statement.

According to the PNP, the latest monitoring period recorded an 87.15% crime clearance efficiency rate, while crime solution efficiency improved to 68.19% from 64.92% in the previous monitoring period.

The police organization attributed the gains to intensified police operations and evidence-based investigations.

“Ang pagbaba ng focus crimes ay resulta ng tuloy-tuloy na trabaho ng ating mga pulis sa buong bansa, kasama ang suporta ng mga komunidad at local government units. Hindi tayo titigil hangga’t hindi mas lalo pang nararamdaman ng mamamayan ang seguridad sa kanilang mga lugar,” PNP chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said.
