Ex-DPWH chief Bonoan had 'elevated' lab results — PNP Health Service

The laboratory test results of former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Manuel Bonoan were elevated as he continues to receive medical attention following his arrest over graft and plunder charges.

Police Brigadier General Portia Manalad, director of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Health Service, reported the development after Bonoan underwent lab tests at the PNP General Hospital.

"Under observation po siya with elevated lab results (He is under observation with elevated lab results) and for further evaluation of medical specialists, taking into consideration his age and risks," Manalad told reporters in a message.

In a separate statement, the PNP said full transparency and strict compliance with legal procedures are being observed as Bonoan remains under medical care at the PNPGH.

PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the organization is committed to ensuring that Bonoan's confinement will not affect the implementation of lawful court processes.

"The PNP enforces court orders fairly and without favor. Former Secretary Bonoan surrendered voluntarily but required immediate medical intervention after a severe blood pressure spike during booking," he said.

"I have directed the PNP Health Service and the CIDG to maintain full transparency, enforce tight security, and ensure that no special or 'VIP' treatment is extended," he added.

According to Nartatez, Bonoan will be turned over immediately to the proper judicial authorities as soon as he is medically cleared.

Bonoan was brought back to the PNPGH on Tuesday afternoon after his arraignment at the Sandiganbayan was postponed amid concerns over his elevated blood pressure.

He was initially confined at the PNPGH after surrendering to the CIDG on Monday as the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division issued a warrant for his arrest over his alleged role in the flood control scandal.

Authorities said he experienced a blood pressure spike during booking procedures, prompting immediate medical intervention.

The former DPWH chief appealed for hospital arrest.

Bonoan's co-accused, including Senator Jinggoy Estrada, are detained at the New Quezon City Male Dormitory Jail in Payatas.

The PNP Health Service is set to conduct and document an independent medical assessment of Bonoan's condition.

Meanwhile, the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and custodial units were ordered to maintain complete records of confinement, treatment, and all movements while Bonoan remains under police custody. — VDV, GMA News
