Marcos sympathizes with Venezuela after devastating earthquakes
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Thursday extended sympathies to the people of Venezuela, following powerful successive earthquakes that ravaged the country.
“Deeply saddened by the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela. On behalf of the Filipino people, I extend our heartfelt sympathies,” Marcos said in a statement.
The President said the Philippines stands in solidarity with the Venezuelan people during this trying time.
He also expressed hope for the safety and swift recovery of all communities affected.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday that there are no reports so far of Filipino casualties following the earthquakes that hit the South American country of over 28 million people.
The DFA said it is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela through the Philippine Embassy in Bogota. Filipinos there were also advised to seek shelter in a safe place and monitor local news for updates.
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit about 160 km (100 miles) west of Caracas on Wednesday, followed less than a minute later by a magnitude 7.5 tremor, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The USGS said that “high casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread," initially estimating the death toll ranging from 10,000 to 100,000.
