UPLB deploys security guards, shuttle service to keep students safe

The University of the Philippines Los Baños has taken steps to secure the campus after one if its students was raped on Oct.15, the university chancellor said.

In a statement, UPLB Chancellor Rex Victor Cruz said the university is implementing "all possible measures to keep our students safe while they are inside the campus."

"With the October (15) incident, UPLB resolves to address the ‘porous’ entry points along the areas used by residents of nearby villagers in the campus. We will also strengthen the proactive collaboration and cooperation with local government authorities, students, and other community members so that the University and its environs may be crime-free and safe for everyone, especially for our students," Cruz said.

He said the UPLB has established security measures including the deployment of security officers around the campus.

"Over the last three years, we have also beefed up our University Police Force by hiring additional security personnel such as blue guards and members of our Community Service Brigade (CSB). Our security personnel regularly patrol and monitor the whole campus to ensure that our students are safe," he said.

Cruz said UPLB has been working with the local government and the Philippine National Police to ensure the safety and security of the community.

On Oct. 15, a 17-year-old student was raped in the UPLB's area of responsibility.

Police have arrested a tricycle driver for the rape.

Cruz said their investigation showed the student was going home from a school activity on the evening of Oct 15 when the suspect picked her up along a road outside the campus.

The suspect then brought his victim near IPB Road, an area within UPLB's jurisdiction.

"Let this incident be a rallying call for all concerned authorities to ensure that every nook and cranny of Los Baños and neighboring communities is rid of potential offenders and criminals who prey on our students and the general public. Most importantly, let this be a demand for justice to be served speedily for the victim," Cruz said.

Late-night transportation for students, staff

Cruz also said UPLB has been implementing the Comprehensive Late Night Service (UPLB Housing Office) and the Security Assistance Service (University Police Force).

These provide transportation to students and staff who need to get to their respective dormitories and homes inside the campus after late night activities, he said.

Under the scheme, the vehicles are deployed at 10 p.m., 12 a.m., 2 a.m., and 4 a.m.; and at 11 p.m., 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., respectively.

"Further, we have been strictly following a policy that holding of student activities should not go beyond 10 p.m. so that our students can go home early," he said. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
